A gap between the two upper front teeth is commonly known as a diastema. In some levels of dental growth, a diastema is normal and the space closes after the appearance of the permanent eye teeth (canine teeth). But in some people, this space does not close. Diastema might be just a part of a series of problems that need a wide scope of orthodontic treatment or it could be the only concern that needs orthodontic treatment. Usually, people treat diastema for reasons of beautification. They are normally self-conscious about the space between their teeth. But there are those who have it treated because it affects speech. When speaking, the tongue pushes forward to produce particular sounds like the letter “S”. This perennial exertion on the tongue can make diastema worse with time.

After having braces the next step is to wear retainers to prevent your teeth from shifting back from their old position. We are thought to clean and care for our braces so thus our retainers. Taking care of your retainers doesn’t have to be difficult. The following tips can help you take care as well as keep up with your retainers. Brush your retainers as you brush your teeth and rinse it with cool or warm water. Do not flip your retainers with your tongue because this usually ends up breaking the retainer; Never wrap it with a napkin because more than likely it will get thrown. Do not put it in your pocket or purse for it will surely break. Last but not the least; do not leave it sitting around for curious children or dogs might eat them up. Having a retainer replaced or repaired can be quite costly.

Damon braces utilize some of the newest technologies in braces. Many people are shifting towards using the Damon system for teen braces because of their many benefits. It is generally faster, more comfortable and can straighten your teeth with fewer extractions and fewer complicated pre-treatment procedures.

Conventional teen braces usually have rubber o-shaped rings for attaching the wire to the brace. Because of the material, they tend to put unnatural and rather uncomfortable pressure on the teeth to shift them into the right position. This tightening can be painful. Damon braces, on the other hand, have a gate that allows the wire to move freely and it creates less friction and is, therefore, less painful.

Another advantage of getting Damon teen braces is that it is more hygienic. The o-ring retains plaque because of its organic nature. Micro-organisms, bacteria and plaque increase the chances of tooth decay. Damon braces don’t use o-rings, and the wires are mostly mobile. The chances for decalcification and tooth decay is greatly reduced during the course of the treatment.

Crossbite is an abnormal bite relationship of upper and lower jaw. Here the lower teeth/tooth align toward the check/ lip side more than the upper teeth/tooth.
When you have this, your upper teeth do not come down slightly in front of the lower teeth when biting together normally. This situation can cause teeth to be more prone to being knocked off.

Open bite is the situation wherein the upper teeth are not able to contact the opposing lower teeth. You have this when there are spaces between the biting surfaces of your front and/or side teeth when the back teeth bite together

Orthodontic treatments are generally not that expensive compared with other personal services and the cost of an orthodontic treatment usually depends on the area you are staying and on the complexity of the patient’s case. Getting dental braces in a rural area may mean getting orthodontic treatments at a less expensive cost since there may be fewer orthodontists in there. However, getting braces in a more cosmopolitan area with experienced and recognized orthodontists will mean having treatments at a more expensive price. Also, the complexity of the case is an important factor that will determine how much a patient should expect to pay. All in all, it is better to look for an orthodontist who can set up an appropriate fee for your treatment.
As with all dental treatments, having dental braces requires good oral hygiene in order to sustain the health of your teeth. Regular brushing and flossing is needed as well as regular visits to your dentist so that your teeth remain clean and healthy. Aside from maintaining a balanced diet, try limiting your in-between-meals snacks (which commonly include nuts, popcorn, hard candies, etc.) since these can increase the chances of you accidentally bending the wires or chipping your brackets off. Also, if you are planning to engage in a sport or other activities which can accidentally cause injury to your mouth or jaw while on dental braces, use a protective mouth guard in order to keep the braces secured.
Finally, you have selected what you think is the right orthodontist for you and you’re excited to meet him or her to have your very first consultation. When meeting with your orthodontist for your consultation, be sure to pay attention to some important details which could guide you during the whole orthodontic treatment. Try asking some questions about his level of experience in the field and ask how extensive his know-how in the practice is. You can also request for some before-and-after photos of patients so that you can evaluate the results. Ask information about the treatment (technologies and methods used) and assess them based on the treatment plan your orthodontist has prepared for you.
Still, looking for the best orthodontist for you is no easy task and this means taking into consideration some important reminders that can help you choose an orthodontist whom you feel confident and comfortable with.

• Value your general dentist’s recommendation since general dentists coordinate with orthodontists regarding patient care. More often than not, your general dentist will refer you to an orthodontist he or she has connections with.
• Ask friends, colleagues, neighbors and other people you know whom they can recommend as a good orthodontist. This way, you can also base your decision on how these patients were satisfied with their orthodontists.
