Do you need an orthodontic treatment? (2/3)

by mheo soriano

Crossbite
Crossbite is an abnormal bite relationship of upper and lower jaw. Here the lower teeth/tooth align toward the check/ lip side more than the upper teeth/tooth.
When you have this, your upper teeth do not come down slightly in front of the lower teeth when biting together normally. This situation can cause teeth to be more prone to being knocked off.

Open bite
Open bite is the situation wherein the upper teeth are not able to contact the opposing lower teeth. You have this when there are spaces between the biting surfaces of your front and/or side teeth when the back teeth bite together

A malocclusion or a bad bite is one of the most common oral health problem in which orthodontic treatment is needed. It can be caused by several factors such as: a) Having a small mouth which can crowd permanent teeth; b) Tongue thrusting which can cause the protrusion of teeth (open bite) most especially in children; c) Having either extra teeth or insufficient teeth which can affect a person’s bite; d) Having a misaligned jaw and bone structure which can cause malocclusion by affecting the bite, and; e) Having poor muscular functional habits such as thumb sucking which can affect dental development.

Tooth Discoloration

Two of most common problem with tooth was discoloration and staining. Teeth are permeable therefore, they are not stain resistant.

Elements such as soda, red wine, coffee, tea, and other food, are factors to the discoloration of teeth. Medicine such as the antibiotic tetracycline can produce staining, resulting in yellow, grayish teeth. Smokers can also cause the teeth to be stained permanently if it is not taken care of. Conditions such as fluorosis, dentin and enamel dysplasia and dental caries are secondary to tooth discoloration.

Tooth discoloration may also occur by a fall or a accidental collision known as Tooth trauma – tooth necrosis.

crowding of teeth

Misplaced midline— You have this when the center of your upper front teeth does not line up with the center of your lower front teeth

Spacing — gaps, or spaces, between the teeth as a result of missing teeth or teeth that do not “fill up” the mouth

Crowding — when there are too many teeth for the dental ridge to accommodate

How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?
There are different types of appliances, both fixed and removable, that are used to help move teeth, retrain muscles and affect the growth of the jaws. These devices work by placing mild pressure on the teeth and jaws.
